								Dester Zeogar Wilson
Board of Directors Chairman
Mr. Wilson is the former Minister of Youth and Sports, Republic of Liberia (2018-2024) and current Chair of the Board of Directors of the Antoinette Tubman Cheshire Home.
People living with Intellectual Developmental Disabilities and Mental Health deserve to live the fulfilling life they so desire. Those who are passionate and care about this population also have a responsibility to demonstrate that compassion while making sure the desires of the individuals are met.
My love, care, and compassion working with individuals living with Intellectual Development Disabilities, Mental Health, Autism, Down Syndrome, etc. developed 22 years ago when I started working for a company called ResCare in New Jersey.
My desire to learn more about this population led my transformation through trainings, seminars, workshop and got me elevated from being a Caregiver to Manager, Clinical Director, Project Director, Unit Director, Residential Services Director and Chief Executive Officer, CEO, with different Human Services Companies in the United States. This is what led to my decision to join the Antoinette Tubman Cheshire Home Board of Directors when a request was made by the Interim Leadership of the Board.

From my early beginnings, I was raised and molded by adults whose influence helped to set my
life's purpose, That purpose? Service.
I was educated across 3 continents; my most profound educational foundation being built
during my early childhood years in Sinoe County, Liberia.
I received my secondary education in the United Kingdom and a B.S. degree in the United
States.
My career goal was to become a medical professional in order to return to Liberia to serve my
country and its people. The coup d'etat and ensuing war played a major part in sidelining my
ambitions…. Like most Liberians, I went into survival mode and sought out a means of
supporting myself fully, not knowing if I would ever have a home to return to.
My resulting career was two-fold. From 1985-1999, I was employed by one of the world's
largest beverage companies, working in the Quality Control Department as a Quality Assurance
Analyst.
In 1999, the inner urge to serve began to surface. When I could no longer suppress it, I went to
work in the service industry where I was employed by a major airline. From 1999-2016, I
worked in the InFlight Department as a Flight Attendant. ( Performing acts of kindness to
strangers on a constant basis was not work. For me, it was unfettered, continuous joy. For the
first time in my life, my job was my ‘play’.) I retired in 2016.
Why are we here? Why me?
‘We are all here to walk each other home’, says Ram Dass, a Spiritual Teacher.
One of the adults (who raised me) introduced me to the Home in the mid-’80's during a visit to
Liberia. There, I met the Residents, the Staff and Lord Cheshire - who was also visiting. The
ATCH has been an important part of my life since.
It is said that when a gift is given, or a kindness performed, the giver experiences an even
greater level of joy than the recipient.
Whenever I visit the Home and am greeted with smiles on the faces of the Residents, I catch a
glimpse of Heaven on Earth. The feeling of upliftment is indescribable!
Tell me, then, who is the REAL recipient of charity here? I must confess - it is I.
